Finished Blue Blooded

Blue Blooded, Coloured Pencil on Colourfix Paper, 19" x 17" (48cm x 43cm)
Copyright Teresa Mallen

Here is a finished image of my funky Blue Blooded. The colours are brighter and more vivid in real life but this is the best photo I have at the moment. Until I worry about getting a good image for my website, this shall suffice. I have had this done for quite awhile but every time I wanted to take a photo, it was raining outside. I find this a spooky piece to have in the studio unframed. It looks so much like pastel that every time I move it from one spot to another, I keep expecting pastel pigment to fall off!

Things have been real exciting in the studio - I have been taking inventory. Woo-hoo. :-) I have gone through my pencils and I have shopped for ones that needed replacing. I even got out my superglue and glued pencil stubs to my new pencils. Now I realize that some cp artists think this is going over the top. Many just throw out their pencils when they shorten down so much that that they are impossible to hold on to or sharpen. Me, I like to glue. I find it works really well, they sharpen just fine in my electric sharpener and they look really cool when people visit your studio!

I attended a presentation last week by local watercolour artist Brian Seed. For readers who are watercolour artists, you might wish to check out the handprint website. Brian recommended it as a great resource for info. I had a look and it does seem like you could spend quite a bit of time there.

I always like seeing the work of coloured pencil artists. The April/May 2010 issue of International Artist featured several pages of cp art by Judith Burton. If you don't have a copy of the magazine, you can see Judith's work by visiting the pencil gallery on her website. (just click her name for the hyperlink)

Well yippee, my taxes are done. Now I am working on tweaking my website. In the studio, I have some pots of Colourfix primer (the same stuff that is applied to the surface of Colourfix sanded pastel paper) waiting to be applied to some birch panels that I have bought.

For those of you who have been reading for awhile, you will be well aware of all of my trips out of town to get the house when my parents had lived ready for sale. I am happy to report that much work has been done and the property has now been listed in real estate. That translates into more time in the studio for me. Finally. Oh and in the garden too. :-)

It is a beautiful spring here in Ottawa. Here are a few pics I took today.

Starting with daffodils...

forsythia shrub...

white hyacinth...

and some red tulips that are starting to open...

You might recall my basement grow-op that I mentioned a few weeks ago. Here are some of my tomato plant seedlings as they look now...

And here are some squash seedlings...

May you be enjoying a wonderful spring where you are!

I really like the blue blooded painting. Wonderful job.
I have some of my flowers blooming and still waiting for some. It is exciting to see them come up and show their beauty. I planted the bulbs last fall and I am sure that as the years pass they will become more beautiful.
I keep my pencils stubs as well. I have not clued them yet but have been told that it works really well and with the cost of each pencil it will help stretch my budget.

Hi Vicki, thank you. I wonder if the title suits it still. The piece went off into a brighter, more colourful direction than I had originally intended. But if you think it is a great title, then maybe I shall leave it as it is! :-)

Hi Maria, thanks for your comments. Isn't it wonderful to see what we planted months ago actually come up? I had some plants come up that I had forgotten I had planted!! That was a pleasant surprise. :-)

The blues in this and the abstract qualities are perfect. I like it a lot.

I am still waiting for flowers to arrive - and warmth. But it will get here. However, there are a lot of seedlings coming up nicely in the greenhouse. Should be a bumper year.

I've heard of gluing pencils together but haven't tried it yet. I must.

A most fabulous post, Teresa. I enjoyed each word and the variety of subjects. I need to do an art inventory of the pieces I've purchased from others over the years. Before it gets much bigger...but it is just daunting for me for some odd reason. The colors in blueblood are just fabulous!

Teresa, what a wonderful and informative post. I am trying out different things with colored pencil right now,so your information was great to see. I love the idea of gluing on the stubs to new pencils.
The Blue Blooded piece is so interesting. I love the movement and color variations. You are one talented lady. Thanks for sharing all that talent with the rest of us. I did the pictures of Fruit and Vegetable Heads on my blog with colored pencil. take a look sometime

Oh wow. I think Blue Blooded is a perfect title. Its gorgeous!
And yes, I glue my pencils too. I just used a 'double ended' Poppy red that was two old stubs glued together.
And such pretty flowers!

Thanks Jeanette. I hope you get flowers and warmth real soon!

A.L. thank you for your very kind words and you too M.M. I appreciate you both taking the time to comment.

Hey Ms. Paula, you are a great friend - thanks! :-) Got me some double ended stubbies myself.

I am a pencil-gluing failure, Teresa. I've tried and tried, and I cannot get them to stay.....maybe my glue is....old. Bah! I gave up and now I have dozens and dozens of stubs collecting in a plastic dish. I will either a) draw a still life of them, b)make a necklace - haha, or c) bring them to you in S.F.!

Your drawing is beautiful; vibrant and so much energy!

Hey Teresa! I love Blue Blooded! Very striking!

It sounds like you like spring as much as I do! The fresh air, the beautiful new life!

I have also been gluing my pencils for years. Ever since the price of a pencil went over $1 (hmmm...I sound cheap) I vowed to get every last penny out of my pencils. Huh!

Hi Teresa! I love this new piece! Love the blues and the abstract feel that it has!

BTW, I love to glue the pencil nubs too! Nothing like sharpening through to the next pencil. ;)

Love your glorious parade of flowers following your moody blue art! The sun just gleams outdoors on them as meanwhile Blue Blooded stays shaded and looking cool indoors.

I love "Blue Blooded"! So very smooth, yet rich and lush at the same time. Can't decide if it makes me think of seaweed, water bubbles or something totally imaginary... but it's beautiful!

Lynda, maybe it is your glue! I use a 'super glue' and I find if I press the two pencils together for 15 - 30 seconds they are fine. I then set the pencil aside to sit overnight before I use it.

Dianna, Beth glad to hear I am not the only gal who glues! Yeah for frugality! :-)

C.D., you are so right, Blue Blooded does look cool and moody in comparison. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you Teresa! Water bubbles, yes - I 'see' that too.
